Who it is for

The book is written for:

  • anyone who has access to data and wants to understand it,
  • managers who make decisions based on data,
  • analysts and developers who build visualizations and dashboards, and
  • aspiring data scientists.

You need neither advanced math nor programming experience. Copilot makes the start easier, because many tasks can be done with plain-language instructions.

What is inside

The chapters move from basics to advanced analysis:

  • Getting started with Power BI
  • Connecting data sources
  • Creating visualizations
  • Aggregations, calculations, and parameters
  • Calculations across dimensions with DAX
  • Maps
  • Trends, forecasts, clusters, and distributions
  • Reports and DAX formulas with Copilot
  • Interactive dashboards
  • Power BI as part of Microsoft Fabric
  • Sharing and collaborating in the cloud

Companion materials

All example files are on GitHub: aloth/Power-BI-Fabric-Copilot-Buch-Begleitmaterialien. The repository follows the book’s chapter structure. For each chapter, it contains the finished .pbix solutions and intermediate states, plus the raw data, such as Financial_Sample.xlsx. The materials are licensed under CC BY 4.0.

What you need

  • Power BI Desktop is free, from the Microsoft Store or the web. It requires Windows 10 or later. On a Mac, you need a virtual machine, for example with Parallels Desktop.
  • Sharing reports in the Power BI service requires Power BI Pro or Premium Per User.
  • Copilot requires a workspace on a paid Fabric capacity: at least F2 for development, F64 for users who only view reports. Your tenant administrator also has to enable the Copilot setting in the admin portal.

The repository README lists which chapters need which license.

Earlier books

Peter and I wrote Datenvisualisierung mit Power BI together, and in English I wrote Teach Yourself VISUALLY Power BI for Wiley. The new book also covers Microsoft Fabric and Copilot.

Where to get it

The book is available in bookstores, for example at Thalia and Amazon.
