I’m excited to announce a feature I’ve been wanting to build for a long time: AI Insights in Mindful Coffee. Starting with version 5.3, your caffeine tracker now offers personalized, intelligent commentary about your coffee habits — and it’s all powered by Apple Intelligence, running entirely on your device.
What Are AI Insights?
Instead of just showing you numbers and charts, Mindful Coffee now talks to you. The AI analyzes your current caffeine level, the time of day, your recent sleep patterns, and your personal metabolism settings — then gives you a short, helpful message tailored to your situation.
Having your first coffee at 7 AM after a good night’s sleep? The app might say: “Great timing — you’re catching your cortisol dip perfectly.” Third espresso at 4 PM when you’ve already crossed your sleep threshold? You’ll get a gentle nudge that you might be pushing your bedtime later than you’d like.
These aren’t generic tips pulled from a database. They’re generated fresh, in real-time, based on your data.
Privacy First: Everything Stays on Your Device
Here’s the part I’m most proud of: your data never leaves your iPhone. AI Insights uses Apple’s new Foundation Models framework, which runs the AI model directly on your device. There’s no cloud processing, no API calls to external servers, no data collection. Your caffeine habits, sleep patterns, and health data stay exactly where they belong — with you.
This is only possible thanks to the powerful Neural Engine in recent Apple devices. You’ll need an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16, or a Mac/iPad with Apple Silicon to use AI Insights, but the privacy benefits are worth it.
From Research to Your Pocket
If you follow my work, you might know about JudgeGPT — my research project exploring how AI can evaluate and interpret complex information while maintaining accuracy and transparency. Building AI Insights for Mindful Coffee gave me a chance to apply some of those principles in a consumer context.
The challenge was similar: how do you get an AI to give genuinely useful, personalized advice without hallucinating or being generic? The answer lies in grounding the model with real data (your actual caffeine levels and patterns), keeping the context focused (just your coffee habits, not everything), and being transparent when the AI is speaking (you’ll see a subtle sparkle indicator when insights are AI-generated).
A Research Preview
I’m launching AI Insights as a “Research Preview” — a label I’m borrowing from my Cortisol Rhythm Modeling feature. This means the feature is fully functional and ready to use, but I’m still learning from how people interact with it. If your device doesn’t support Apple Intelligence, you’ll still get helpful rule-based messages, so no one’s left out.
AI Insights is available to Mindful Coffee Pro subscribers. If you’ve been curious about going Pro, this might be the feature that tips you over.
Try It Today
Update to Mindful Coffee 5.3 and look for the AI Insights card on your main dashboard. I’d love to hear what you think — whether the insights feel helpful, surprising, or occasionally off-base. Your feedback helps me refine the prompts and make the feature even better.
Here’s to smarter coffee drinking. ☕
